Human Impacts on the Ocean Project
This was my students’ favorite Oceanography project, but could also work in any class building lessons around climate change phenomena - environmental science, chemistry or marine biology could easily adapt this project to fit a unit. Students are provided with a list of different mediums for their final project, the project requirements, and a Project Planning Document - Fillable PDFs that are set up and ready to go! This is a student self-directed research project; create a timetable with regular check-ins with students and let them do the rest. Students choose what topic they want to cover under “Human Impacts on the Ocean” - great pacific garbage patch, dying coral reefs or shellfish due to ocean acidification, overfishing, whale hunting, shark killings, jellyfish overpopulation, and dredging the seafloor for heavy metals for use in electronics are just some of the many examples of project topics students have explored. Student choice and ownership in the direction of their education makes for high engagement and completion with truly spectacular results. Estimated time to complete: For my students, the research, planning and execution of this project took roughly 3 weeks.
